Based on the historic pastel travel case from 1930, this pastel set is a modern interpretation of the original. The elegant walnut-stained beechwood case, featuring stylish brass hardware and a nostalgic owl print, combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance.

Inside, there are two removable trays where your valuable artist’s pastels can be stored and transported safely. Beneath the wooden trays, an extra compartment provides space for the included cloth with a retro owl motif. The handmade leather handle ensures comfortable transport. The travel pastel set is complemented by a stylish pastel insert and a letter from the management at the time, presented in a charming, vintage-inspired cardboard box.

The set contains 48 whole, extra-soft artist pastels. At Schmincke, each primary color is typically available in several mixing stages, indicated by a letter following the color number: D is the pure, full-tone color; H, M, and O indicate increasing amounts of white added; and B indicates black added. Schmincke dry pastels (Series 17) are handmade, extra-soft artist pastels made from pure pigments with a minimal amount of binder. The complete range includes about 200 shades, and each primary color is typically available in several shades: a pure, full-tone color (D), a variant with black added (B), and three lighter shades with increasing amounts of white (H, M, and O). The pastels have a velvety-soft, matte surface and are known for their high lightfastness.

About Schmincke

Schmincke was founded in 1881 by the paint chemists Josef Horadam and Hermann Schmincke in Germany. The company’s first product was the “Mussini” oil paint, developed based on traditional resin-oil paint recipes from the Italian artist Cesare Mussini. In 1892, Josef Horadam developed a new type of liquid-cast watercolor, which he named after himself—the foundation of what is now the Horadam Aquarell series. More than 140 years later, Schmincke is still guided by the company motto “Meliora cogito” (I strive for the best), and Horadam Aquarell remains one of the most highly regarded watercolor series among professional artists worldwide.
