About Faber-Castell

Faber-Castell was founded in 1761 in Stein near Nuremberg by the cabinetmaker Kaspar Faber and is thus the world’s oldest pencil manufacturer, still owned by the Faber family through eight generations. Under Lothar von Faber (1817–1896), the company expanded internationally with offices in New York, London, and Paris, and Lothar was also a pioneer in trademark protection. The name “Castell” was adopted in 1898 when Ottilie von Faber married Count Alexander zu Castell Rüdenhausen. The Castell 9000 was developed in 1905 by Alexander Graf von Faber-Castell and was given its distinctive green lacquer finish to set it apart from the yellow and red pencils of the time. The company also launched the well-known Polychromos colored pencils in 1908, which are still produced today.
