About Faber-Castell

Faber-Castell is the world’s oldest manufacturer of pencils, founded in 1761 in Stein near Nuremberg by the cabinetmaker Kaspar Faber. The company has remained in the family’s ownership for several generations. In the early 1800s, the third-generation head of the family, Georg Leonhard Faber, established the standard hardness grades still used today and, under the name “A. W. Faber,” launched what is considered the world’s first branded pencil. His son, Lothar von Faber, subsequently expanded the company into the global market, opening branches in New York, London, and Paris, among other cities.

In 1905, the company launched the green Castell 9000 pencil, and the name Faber-Castell came into being when the Faber family joined forces with Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen. Today, Faber-Castell cultivates a large portion of the wood for its pencils in its own certified pine plantations in Brazil and uses exclusively water-based, environmentally friendly varnish in its European production. The “Made in Germany” quality label has been the hallmark of the company’s art and design products since its inception.
